The number one development to come out of what we might call the web 2.0 movement is interactivity. Today’s sites aren’t the equivalent of an online book or magazine. They feature opportunities for readers to share the site with others and to share their opinions.
This offers a great deal of potential to a smart online publisher. By creating a site that allows others to interact with it in a variety of ways, one can develop a loyal following and gain a great deal of attention.
That does require some effort, however. You want to create opportunities for readers to leave comments and you want to then respond to those comments, creating a legitimate dialog. You also want to make it as easy as possible for readers to share your content and link with their bookmarking sites and other social outlets. That’s being web 2.0 “compliant” and it really pays off.
Those who disregard interactivity do so at their own peril. With innovation comes expectation and today’s Internet users expect more than the traditional top-down publication model. They want their voices to be heard and to have the opportunity to share good information with others.
