Podcasting on the Cheap

Podcasting has become a very popular way of sharing information online.  Instead of relying purely on text, it allows online publishers to integrate audio into their offerings.  This has value for a few different reasons.  First, it creates a “mobile” version of your message, as people can download your content and listen to it on their iPods or MP3 players.  Second, it creates an alternative form of content for those who don’t necessarily want to rely upon text.  Third, it offers a chance to display one’s creativity in ways that might not be possible in print.

Some online publishers have stayed away from pod casting because of cost concerns.  They don’t need to.  It’s quite easy to pod cast inexpensively.  In addition to your content and your voice, all you really need is a microphone and the right software.

You can spend some money on a great microphone, but inexpensive alternatives will do the trick for most pod casters.  You can also purchase high-end software for expert results, but most will find that free programs like Audacity provide all the features necessary to create a solid pod cast.

If you ‘re avoiding audio because of cost concerns, you shouldn’t be.  Putting together a decent broadcast is incredibly easy and inexpensive.
